Opening of Material Description Laboratories at Sohar University

On Wednesday, 11 April 2018, Sohar University and ORPIC celebrated the opening of Materials Description Laboratories. The celebration was under the patronage of His Excellency of Dr. Hilal bin Ali Al Hinai, the General Secretary of Research Council, and it was attended by a number of Honorees and Excellencies, the Heads of the Boards of Directors and Trustees of the University, the Executive Management and Chief Executive Officer of ORPIC, and a number of employees. The laboratories have been established with the support of the Oman Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (ORPIC), in cooperation with the US company GRACE WR at a cost of three and a half million dollars.
The project is part of ORPIC’s various programs in support of local values within Oman, and the first of its kind in the Middle East and the third in the world. These laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to test crude oil cracking catalysts that are of great importance to students and provide an opportunity to transfer advanced technology to Omani students and professionals.
A number of highly skilled Omanis have been employed in this project. The advanced technologies used in the project will provide high quality service in line with the rapid response times for many of the technical requirements for ORPIC’s refineries.
GRACE, being the world's leading supplier of crude oil cracking catalysts, will provide technical support in staff training and help support the educational process and research at Sohar University.
It is worth mentioning that Sohar University has made significant achievements in the fields of scientific research. Another in-progress project is "Intaj Sohar”, which is one of the outputs of the Manufacturing Sector, being implemented by the National Program for the Promotion of Economic Diversification "Tanfedh"
